Following on from the release of their debut album Evergreen in 2014 and the international attention that came both before and after its release, BROODS’ follow-up sounds like something you would expect from them, albeit with a twist. Conscious feels deceptively similar yet refreshingly different, keeping the breezy echo of their debut but filtering in a darker side, alongside some natural instrumentation, to expand their palette and make for a more dynamic album. Results tend to vary, but this is no reason to shy away from it.

Almost two years since the release of their debut album 'Evergreen', Broods are back. Louder, feistier and braver. Opening track 'Free', a thumping electro-pop anthem, introduces a darker sound. “This album is a punch in the face compared to the last one." synth-player Caleb Nott explains. "This one really goes for the throat.”

The breakout success of Broods' 2014 debut, Evergreen, required the NZ brother-sister duo, Georgia and Caleb Nott, to suddenly ramp up their intimate-electro creations to bigger rooms on the fly. It's inevitable, then, that follow-up Conscious – again helmed by producer Joel Little (Lorde, Ellie Goulding) – bears the growing pains of a band seeking arena-size additions to the set.

Chance the Rapper - Coloring Book Reviews (Critic Reviews & Ratings)
Rating: 85/100 - Based on 7 Critics - Genre: Rap
100 - Consequence of Sound
While Coloring Book successfully channels the musical conventions of African-American church tradition without sounding dated or pastiche, the album also subtly chronicles black history and uses it as inspiration for artistic freedom.

The Felice Brothers - Life in the Dark Reviews (Critic Reviews & Ratings)
Rating: 65/100 - Based on 4 Critics - Genre: Folk/Indie

Ian Felice’s lyrics tread a careful line between the blackest of humour and outright darkness, and their troubling imagery sounds musically exuberant.

On Life In The Dark, the Felice Brothers continue their decade-plus quest of chronicling our crooked national pathologies with quirky humor, slacker indifference and guarded folkie optimism. Never before has the Felice Brothers taken in their country with so much wide-eyed wonder.

Given how good the Felices are at what they do, fans are still likely to enjoy Life in the Dark's rambling take on American roots music, but casual observers might find their minds wandering by the time the album makes it into its final innings.

Neil Young - Earth Reviews (Critic Reviews & Scores)
Rating: 72/100 - Based on 6 Critics
88 - Paste Magazine
Earth is an engaging, highly credible recording that burns with a fire of its own. From beginning to end, it is brave, uncompromising, cracked up and beautiful.

75 - Allmusic
Neil Young used his union with the Promise of the Real -- the gangly crew fronted by Willie Nelson's kids Lukas and Micah -- to tackle weighty social problems on The Monsanto Years, a record supported by a relatively expansive tour. Earth, a double album culled from 2015 performances, goes one further, mining ecologically minded Young tunes and then addressing them to mother earth herself.

These performances are more urgent, in point and force, than Young's 2015 studio manifesto, The Monsanto Years.

At first it’s disorientating, but gradually--it’s 90 minutes long--it becomes mesmeric, relaxing and not unlike a Laurie Anderson or Brian Eno ‘sound installation’.

In many places, Young squeezed the squawks and yelps into the center of the songs, creating surprisingly fine hooks. Three songs from Monsanto turn up here, in versions far angrier, and sharper than the studio takes. The rest of the set cherry-picks environmental songs from throughout Young’s catalogue.

It may not go down as one of Neil’s definitive works, but Earth achieves something Young hasn’t been able to accomplish on record in a while: he's made an album worth spending some time with.

Masked Intruder - Announce Love and Other Crimes Review
Rating: 60/100 - Genre: Pop-Punk
It’d be easy to dismiss Masked Intruder as a Novelty pop-punk band. The four members are all anonymous and wear different coloured ski masks to differentiate themselves while singing catchy, whimsical songs about love and life, usually from behind bars. While that’s all true, it’s nevertheless hard to deny that the youthful abandon of ‘Running From The Cops’ and the humorous, restraining order romanticism of ‘Still Always On My Mind’ are thoroughly enjoyable. This EP isn’t anything that’ll redefine the genre, it’s just pure fun, but there’s nothing wrong with that.

Story Untold (Canadian Pop-Punkers)
FRENCH CANADIAN POP-PUNKERS WHO DON’T JUST WANT TO GET YOU UNDER THE COVERS
FOR FANS OF: Sum 41, Simple Plan, All Time Low
FROM: Laval, Canada
RELEASE: ‘Story Untold’ (EP, Hopeless. Out now)
Canada has produced its fair share of great bands over the years. From the spit ‘n’ bile hardcore of Comeback Kid to the generation inspiring bounce of Sum 41, or the underground brilliance of Daggermouth and Counterparts, our friends in the great white north have a habit of turning out some mighty fine jams. But it’s notable that almost all of those bands have come from the English speaking parts of the country. Which is where Story Untold come in.
“We’re French Canadian which explains my weirdass accent,” giggles frontman Janick Thibault in an admittedly Gallic twang. “And it’s true that there hasn’t historically been so many French Canadian bands doing well, but there have been a few – we look at guys like [fellow Quebecer’s] Simple Plan as an example of where we can go and what we can achieve.” And where the quintet can go is, based on their remarkable online presence at least, anywhere. Janick’s punked-up cover versions of songs from Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl’ to Flo Rida’s ‘My House’ have developed a pleasing habit of going #fullyviral in recent time, racking up those elusive likes and shares at an astonishing rate. But while Janick is grateful for the exposure, he’s wary his band don’t get dismissed as some novelty sideshow. “I did a video recently explaining to people that we’re going to be spending a lot more time focusing on writing original material for an album,” he admits. “I don’t want to be known as ‘That cover band who sometimes do original songs’ and we’ve already got about 30 tracks demoed for future releases.”
Those future releases will now be put out through Hopeless Records who recently signed the upstarts. “They’re the label who put out so many bands we love so we’re impossibly excited to have a chance to work with them,” grins Janick. “When we started this band in my garage, being on a label like that is all we could have hoped for. Now we just need to make sure we represent and don’t let anyone down!” We’ve got a sneaking suspicion this lot have plenty more stories to tell us yet.

Jake Bugg - On My One Reviews (Critic Reviews & Ratings)
Rating: 55/100 - Based on 8 Critic / Genre: Pop/Rock
80 - Clash Music
Unpredictably diverse and unexpectedly personal, this album sees Bugg managing to maintain the relatable style which won him so many fans in the first place, while taking the necessary risks that allow him to grow as an artist.

70 - Uncut
On the cautionary rockabilly of "Put Out The Fire" and low-slung raunch rap of "Ain't No Rhyme," he demonstrates a firm grasp of his essential strengths.
65 - Paste Magazine
Over just 33 minutes, On My One simply meanders too much, too unfocused as it weaves in and out of multiple genres, never getting a solid footing in any of them.

60 - The Guardian
Sometimes the resulting tracks are just cringeworthy – such as the astonishingly cack-handed hip-hop of Ain’t No Rhyme. Elsewhere, though, they turn out to be quite endearing.

50 - Allmusic
On the whole, the produced numbers are better than the unadorned cuts: Bugg's nasal twang gets buried underneath the gloss and the hooks are pushed to the forefront. The whole thing adds up to a bit of a mess, not in the least because Bugg's schtick was his authenticity.

Co-producer Jacknife Lee overcooks tracks, alternately adding too much sugar and bluster (“Bitter Salt”). Throughout, it seems Bugg’s ambition has clouded his creative judgment.

Bugg has always had one foot in the past and that’s fine, but On My One might as well be an official challenge to The Strypes in the ‘parents record collection’ department--though a mercifully more bearable one.

Too many forced climaxes here lack the organic sense of drama the Mumfords summon at their best, and the pan-African elements aren’t integrated into the pop-rock song structures, so the lively polyrhythms and keening vocals merely decorate the swelling choruses rather than transforming them.

ABC - The Lexicon Of Love II - Review (under-g Best New Album)
“YOU GOT LIGHT, YOU GOT SHADE, YOU GOT BEAUTY AND BEAST/ ALL COME TOGETHER
TO MAKE A MASTERPIECE”. OVER THREE DECADES ON, ABC TELL IT LIKE IT IS…
For some, 1982’s The Lexicon Of Love represents a pinnacle of pop perfection, its literate romance lusciously produced by Trevor Horn, its nostalgic aesthetics a counterpoise to its state of the art sound. Doubters, however, struggle with Martin Fry’s showy vocal mannerisms, the brass fl ourishes, the guitar harmonics, the busy bass lines – Alan Partridge surely mimes along to Poison Arrow – and, in essence, the very extravagance that make its fans so passionate. For ABC to return to their debut, therefore, is a bold move, one whose potential failure risks tarnishing the original’s reputation as well as providing ammunition for those inclined against it.
