Listen to Fearless (Official Audio)

Musical pioneer continues to reshape his sound

review: Not many artists can claim to have created some of their most experimental work in their ninth decade but Jon Hassell has been hitting something of a purple patch in his eighties. Released two years ago, the first volume in his Pentimento series saw him cloaking his wide-eyed amalgamation of global music tropes in a fug of electronic treatments. It felt at once dreamlike and unsettling.

This second part continues on that path. As always, his trumpet lies at the core - its oddly muffled, otherworldly timbre adds elements of exotica that have always decorated his work. Otherwise, the global fıxations of yore -such as the Ethiopian violins which colour the metronomic clicks, deep bassoon hum and overlapping ambient textures on hypnotic opener Fearless -play a more subtle part. On the beautifully constructed Delicado meanwhile, he adds daubs of treated atmospherics, spare piano and electronic glitches to create a canvas of beautifully blurred sonics.
