Sun Ra - Singles: The Definitive 45's Collection Reviews (Critic Reviews)

Based on 7 Critics

info: The three-disc compilation of the 45 RPM singles released between 1952-1961 from the jazz artist.

100 - Allmusic
The set contains much of Ra's more accessible work, making it an excellent (and very generous) introduction for newcomers, but there's also plenty of material that might've escaped notice from longtime fans.

90 - Uncut
It's a mind-boggling assemblage of swingin' 50s "space-bop" like "Soft Talk" and "Super Blonde," processional chants such as "Rocket #9" and "Journey To Saturn." and electronic keyboard voyages like "The Perfect Man" and "Disco 2021," an edited taster of the monumental "Disco 3000."

87 - Pitchfork
Singles offers a wide-ranging but accessible route to his unearthly sounds.

80 - The Observer
Home recordings, small group experiments and the spoken credo of I Am an Instrument make for a rich, eventful ride.

80 - The Independent
They pushed the single envelope in various directions – processional chants, electric-organ improvisations, big-band “space bop”, and at the furthest extreme of his sonic galaxy, the furious free-jazz of “Cosmo-Extensions”, guaranteed to clear the floor at any party.

80  - Record Collector
There’s enough previously unissued material, alongside superb liner notes, to make this entertaining collection a boon for Ra’s growing number of disciples.

80 - Drowned in Sound
It’s exhausting. And while collecting and devouring his albums is probably a more satisfying journey, to be delivered this trove of Fifties big band funk and perverted doo-wop, and to see it spiral out into interstellar space-jams in a stop-motion fashion is a huge thrill. Singles provides the first real opportunity for an audience to hear how Sun Ra became Sun Ra.

Esperanza Spalding - Emily's D+Evolution - Reviews (Critic Reviews)

Rating: 81/100 - Based on 5 Critics - Genre: Jazz/Pop-Rock - Year: 2016

90 - Popmatters
Esperanza Spalding’s new recording, Emily’s D+Evolution is an astonishing beauty, a set of a dozen songs that artfully and persuasively bridge genres.

86 - Pitchfork
The lyrics are elusive at first, darting behind fast-moving songs and delivered in impressionistic, conversational bursts that recall the delivery of Joni Mitchell. But the fearless generosity behind them communicates itself loud and clear, and it's a spirit that animates the entire album. With it, Spalding has once again redefined an already singular career, dictating a vision entirely on her own terms.

80 - Spin
Her fifth album is indeed one of the most alt-friendly jazz cycles you’ve ever heard, pivoting constantly on tight, proggy arrangements that evoke St. Vincent, tUnE-yArDs, and Incubus in their odd-angled crunch more than anything on Blue Note.

John Zorn - The Concealed Review (Jazz)

"The Concealed" brings together Bar Kokhba and The Dreamers. In this sense, it is the Zornian version of Marvel's The Avengers. The band is composed of John Medeski, Mark Feldman, Trevor Dunn, Joey Baron, Kenny Wollesen and Erik Friedlander. So minus a couple of cats like Marc Ribot and Jamie Saft, these guys are the John Zorn All-Stars. "The Concealed" is a melodically satisfying journey. This is a relaxing adventure that is as cerebral as it is enchanting. While there is much collaboration, the two groups generally trade-off. A Dreamers tune will lean on the jazzy side of things while the following Bar Kokhba song will have a chamber sensibility. While classified as one of Zorn's mystical works, it lacks the harp and orchestral bells that characterize other works in the series like "Vision in Blakelight." Along similar lines, The Dreamers deliver their magical chill vibe but leave the lounge, surf and exotica at home.

The Puppini Sisters - Hollywood Reviews

Based on 1 critics - Overal Score:  70/ 100

Described as "the Andrews Sisters on acid," Anglo-Italian vocal trio the Puppini Sisters' sound and style are so steeped in the golden era of the silver screen that it's surprising it's taken this long for the concept of their fourth album, Hollywood, to materialize. 70/100

Critic Reviews for 'George Benson - Guitar Man' at Underground Music

CD Cover Front
Based on 1 critics - Overal Score:  70/ 100

All Music - 70/100: Guitar Man, George Benson's second offering for Concord stands in contrast to 2009's Songs and Stories, though is not an about face. While the earlier album focused on Benson's proven, decades-long formula for pop and smooth jazz -- a group of of easy grooving tunes featuring his silky voice and shimmering guitar work -- this set focuses (primarily) on Benson as a contemporary jazz guitarist.

Silent Movies by Marc Ribot album

The album has a decidedly elegiac tone. (minimal sonic) In someways I expected more humor from a release titled Silent Movies, (guitar's sound) but I couldn't be happier vvith this album. It may be a touch more accessible than Saints (graceful) although Saints has a lot of variation and is a masterpiece.

Liza Minnelli - Confessions

review: This is an elegant and sophisticated (old-school vocal album) piece of work and I thank both of them 4 digging (featuring 14 standards of the pre-rock variety) deep in the American Songbook and putting together such a scaled (romantic evening) dovn prodc where artists and lyric matter most.

Lee Ritenour - 6 String Theory

review: The legendary guitar virtuoso has established (easy listening) himself as a major figure on the session and smooth jazz scene.

Polar Bear - Peepers

review: This record is no exception with (cool & cocky) some really lovely tunes with good beats (Peepers); some far out improvisation (Free Jazz); interesting and experimental atmospheres, (retro swing) induced by electronica and sampling (Want to Belive Everything); and downright (background music) brilliant tune writing Happy For You.

Dave Stapleton Quintet "Between the Lines"

product description: DSQ bring together the muscular, vital front line team of trumpeter Jonny Bruce and saxophonist Ben Waghorn and the subtle, vibrating rhythm section of bassist Paula Gardiner and drummer Elliott Bennett. With Stapleton moving between Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano, this is hi-energy jazz. It is music to feed the mind and move the body. This is the band's third album and confirms Stapleton's position as composer and leader of one of the most innovative and exciting bands on the European Jazz scene.

The Roots - Things Fall Apart

review: The Roots are phenomenal, (cerebral) the most musically gifted hip-hop group, This record jives and grooves (uncompromising) like very few ever have, especially hip-hop ones. (smooth) "Things Fall Apart" could be a avant-garde (street-smart) jazz album, if the vocals were removed. (provocative) But MCs Black Thought and Malik B are like instruments themselves, (confident) deftly flowing along with the rest of the group while (Laid-Back/Mellow) displaying incredible lyric dexterity.
