Opener "Glada" sets the autumnal mood with a touch of Elton John-ish schmaltz, and its lush, full-bodied sound palette shapes the obvious singleshere, "For Sure", "Waking" and "Plastic Beach", each hitting that tear-stained svveet spot between The Killers and The Field Mice. Herring's poetic analysis of a recent break-up makes it ali a compelling listen, but at the age of 36, how much more sadness can a guy take?

Americana-tinged albums, there's often been something cinematic about Ed Harcourt's music, and his latest merges post-rock, trip-hop and new classical to vivid effect. Opener "First Light'"s slow crescendo to a drum-heavy climax recalls Mono's "Ashes In The Snow", "Drowning In Dreams" sees twin saxophones duelling with strings and an Endtroducing... beat, and "After The Carnival" builds tension with propulsive drums and increasingly hysterical strings. But "Only The Darkness Smiles For You" defies its title by upping the romantic quotient with dreamy orchestration, while "King Raman" and "Her Blood Is Volcanic" give chamber music a sultry wink.
