Camper Van Beethoven - Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart

Year:88 Genre: Rock Styles: Alternative Pop-Rock, American Underground

The album featured_the band's trademark eclectick mix of musics, including_folk, ska, Eastern_European music, Americana, psychedelic_rock, & Middle_Eastern music. Despite_ this, it has a considerably_smoother & more mainstream sound than_the band's previous, more garage_rock oriented albums, largely_due to Herring's_production.

Screaming Trees - Anthology: SST Years 1985-1989

year 85-89
* American Underground
* Alternative Pop/ Rock
* Grunge
* Neo-Psychedelia
* College Rock
* Hard Rock
bio: Where many of their Seattle-based contemporaries dealt in reconstructed Black Sabbath and Stooges riffs, Screaming Trees fused '60s psychedelia and garage rock with '70s hard rock and '80s punk. Over the course of their career, their more abrasive punk roots eventually gave way to a hard-edged, rootsy psychedelia that drew from rock and folk equally. After releasing several albums on indie labels like SST and Sub Pop, Screaming Trees moved to Epic Records in 1989. Though they were one of the first Seattle bands to sign with a major label, the group never attained the popularity of fellow Northwestern bands (and friends) like Nirvana and ..

Beat Happening - Jamboree

Year:88 Genre: Rock Styles: Indie Pop, Lo-Fi, American Underground, Alternative Pop/ Rock, Indie Rock, Twee Pop

Jamboree crystallizes_the trio's love_rock aesthetic in its_embryonic stages; veering sharply_from the_idyllic drones of the_perennial "Indian Summer" to the_poignant crush_pop of "Cat Walk" to the indie_party classik "Midnight a Go-Go," each cut is a marvel of_innocence & ingenuity.

The Gun Club - Fire Of Love

Year:81 Genre: Rock Styles: Hard Rock, American Underground, College Rock

The album is considered_groundbreaking in being_the first of its_kind to combine the hard, stripped-dovvn sound of punk rock vvith American_roots musics. In turn, this innovation_helped to create_the punk blues & psychobilly styles as vvell as inspiring countless_garage rock musicians.

Firehose - If'n

Year:87 Genre: Rock Styles: American Underground, College Rock, Alternative Pop/ Rock

The songs are_also more stylistically_consistent vvhere the previous album_featured material_from various_sources (including_Kira Roessler), If'n is more_centered around Mike Watt's vvriting, shovving a band that has_gelled and found its ovvn identity apart_from VVatt & Hurley's_previous (and more vvell-knovvn) band the Minutemen.

the Replacements - Let It Be

year 84
* American Underground
* College Rock
* Rock & Roll
* Hard Rock
* Alternative Pop/ Rock
review: The Replacements half-heartedly tried to expand their reach on Hootenanny, and they followed through on that album's promise on Let It Be. Kicking off with the country-rock shuffle of "I Will Dare," the record explodes into a series of pseudo-hardcore ravers before hitting Paul Westerberg's piano-driven rumination, "Androgynous," one of four major ballads that cuts to the core of Midwestern suburban alienation. "Sixteen Blue" is one of the definitive teenage anthems of the '80s, while "Unsatisfied" rages in despair and Westerberg rarely was more affecting than the solo performance of "Answering Machine." All four, along with "I Will Dare," form the core of Westerberg and the Replacements' canon, and are enough to make Let It Be a cornerstone post-punk album, even if the rest of the record pales next to the songs. All the remaining songs are convincing garage rockers, even if they reveal the Replacements' former punk stance to be a bit of a pose -- a cover of Kiss' "Black Diamond" comes off as a tribute, as does the co-opting of Ted Nugent's "Cat Scratch Fever" for "Gary's Got a Boner." Furthermore, the original numbers lean toward the Faces, leaving the Ramones behind, and while everything except "Seen Your Video," which now sounds as dated as a "disco sucks" rant, consists of bracing rockers, they're a bit inconsequential and point the way toward the band's deadly fascination with classic rock.

Dead Kennedys - Frankenchrist

Genre
Punk - American Underground

year: 85 - review: Released after a three-year studio hiatus, this album picks up right where Plastic Surgery Disasters left off. As always, the lyrics are among the most literate and angry in all of rock & roll. "Goons of Hazard" scores the culture of guns and the rednecks who love them, utilizing full-textured hard rock to set the verses. "Soup Is Good Food" lacerates the concept of disposable people in disposable jobs, pairing this idea with repeated guitar riff-based music that suggests a nightmare version of 1960s songs. more...>

Jon Hassell - Seeing Through Sound album Review and more

Genres: Avant-garde, American Underground

Rating: 80/100

Listen to Fearless (Official Audio)

Slint - Spiderland

More known for its frequent name-checks than its actual music, Spiderland remains one of the most essential and chilling releases in the mumbling post-rock arena. Even casual listeners will be able to witness an experimental power-base that the American underground has come to treasure. Indeed, the lumbering quiet-loud motif has been lifted by everybody from Lou Barlow to Mogwai, the album's emotional gelidity has done more to move away from prog-rock mistakes than almost any of the band's subsequent disciples, and it's easy to hear how the term "Slint dynamics" has become an indie categorization of its own. Most interestingly, however, is how even a seething angularity to songs like "Nosferatu Man" (disquieting, vampirish stop-starts) or "Good Morning, Captain" (a murmuring nod to "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner") certainly signaled the beginning of the end for the band. Recording was intense, traumatic, and one more piece of evidence supporting the theory that band members had to be periodically institutionalized during the completion of the album. Spiderland remains, though, not quite the insurmountable masterpiece its reputation may suggest. Brian McMahan softly speaks/screams his way through the asphyxiated music and too often evokes strangled pity instead of outright empathy. Which probably speaks more about the potential dangers of pretentious post-rock than the frigid musical climate of the album itself. Surely, years later, Spiderland is still a strong, slightly overrated, compelling piece of investigational despair that is a worthy asset to most any experimentalist's record collection.

Fastball - All The Pain Money Can Buy

year: 98
American Tred Rock
Pop Underground

review: When compared to their previous album (the 1996 debut Make Your Mama Proud), Fastball's All the Pain Money Can Buy shows that the group was steadily improving and honing its AAA/roots rock sound. The biggest difference between All the Pain Money Can Buy and their debut is that by spicing up their songs with horns and classic synthesizer sounds, Fastball created an album with greater musical variety. Produced by Julian Raymond and the band, the disc recalls the sound and approach of classic '70s rock, with the group stressing feel over precision. That doesn't stop the band from updating its vintage rock with '90s technology and sounds, however, as proven by the presence of a beatbox in the album's opener, "The Way." One of the best tracks, the laid-back and groovy "Which Way to the Top?," is a duet between Fastball's Miles Zuniga and female solo artist Poe. The horn section featured on the upbeat "G.O.D. (Good Old Days)" recalls early-period Chicago, while the band tackles the singer/songwriter genre of days past on "Out of My Head" with a mellow organ sound and introspective lyrics. If you like your classic rock with a little more grit and experimentation, Fastball are wholeheartedly recommended.download megashares
