Story Untold (Canadian Pop-Punkers)

FRENCH CANADIAN POP-PUNKERS WHO DON’T JUST WANT TO GET YOU UNDER THE COVERS

FOR FANS OF: Sum 41, Simple Plan, All Time Low
FROM: Laval, Canada
RELEASE: ‘Story Untold’ (EP, Hopeless. Out now)

Canada has produced its fair share of great bands over the years. From the spit ‘n’ bile hardcore of Comeback Kid to the generation inspiring bounce of Sum 41, or the underground brilliance of Daggermouth and Counterparts, our friends in the great  white north have a habit of turning out some mighty fine jams. But it’s notable that almost all of those bands have come from the English speaking parts of the country. Which is where Story Untold come in.

“We’re French Canadian which explains my weirdass accent,” giggles frontman Janick Thibault in an admittedly Gallic twang. “And it’s true that there hasn’t historically been so many French Canadian bands doing well, but there have been a few – we look at guys like [fellow Quebecer’s] Simple Plan as an example of where we can go and what we can achieve.” And where the quintet can go is, based on their remarkable online presence at least, anywhere. Janick’s punked-up cover versions of songs from Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl’ to Flo Rida’s ‘My House’ have developed a pleasing habit of going #fullyviral in recent time, racking up those elusive likes and shares at an astonishing rate. But while Janick is grateful for the exposure, he’s wary his band don’t get dismissed as some novelty sideshow. “I did a video recently explaining to people that we’re going to be spending a lot more time focusing on writing original material for an album,” he admits. “I don’t want to be known as ‘That cover band who sometimes do original songs’ and we’ve already got about 30 tracks demoed for future releases.”

Those future releases will now be put out through Hopeless Records who recently signed the upstarts. “They’re the label who put out so many bands we love so we’re impossibly excited to have a chance to work with them,” grins Janick. “When we started this band in my garage, being on a label like that is all we could have hoped for. Now we just need to make sure we represent and don’t let anyone down!” We’ve got a sneaking suspicion this lot have plenty more stories to tell us yet.
