All the songs sound the same. You could swap one for the other, instruments or lyrics and the listener would barely notice. It's like they recycled the same beat over and over again. It is fatiguing to listen to this album.

Her previous efforts, especially 'Joanne' were much superior than this one dimensional mess, where not a single song stands out.

I’ve loved the Pixies since they arrived on the scene. This latest effort was initially a bit underwhelming, as it’s certainly not a ‘Surfer Rosa’, or‘Doolittle’. However those records were made when the band were in their 20’s. If they attempted to sound like an earlier incarnation, they’d be at risk of sounding laughable. What we have here is very different, but still very Pixies. To ‘keep on running instead of standing still’ should be applauded imo- even if it doesn’t work at times. No- it’s not the band’s best album, but it wouldn’t surprise me if some people hear this and discover the band’s earlier material as a result.

In an effort to secure herself as a pop stand-out and because she is feeling like nothing special, this British brash bad-girl-but-not-really is pushing herself to look like an icon and finds the answer in the same syncretism that was responsible for the evolution of pop since its inception. She finds a stable enough place somewhere between EDM, club-pop and dance with just the right touch of industrial to let you know she's worthy of attributing herself to the self-deprecating single-word description that is the album title. The result is something not special enough to make all this effort worth it or make pundits bother finding out what all the fuss is about. But it doesn't matter. Because for you and me the result is the kind of pop music eventful enough to make it interesting and therefore distracting from whatever dark liminal space reality frustratingly keeps setting us in.
