the Veronicas - The Secret Life Of

2006
* Pop/Rock
* Teen Pop
* Punk-Pop

review: Even though these girls have written easily over 100 songs with several producers. "The Secret Life of" is a quality but mixed result. They're main base "4ever" is a fantastic first single and "Everything I'm not" and "When it all falls apart" are good backups. However, after that it goes a little-pear shaped. Secret is a disaster, Speechless a saccahrine ballad and the cover "Mother Mother" very strange and awful. The rest are hit and miss with "Leave me alone" a strong goodbye but others being moody and emotional. Overall, not too bad but a lot of work to be done if these girls want to get noticed.

Beck - Midnight Vultures

year 99
Alternative, Rock, Electronic
review: As musically dazzling as Midnite Vultures often is, the one criticism that can be still levelled at Beck is that his songs remain strangely soulless, failing to ever really grip the emotions or stir the soul.

Step up - Soundtrack

review 2006: Most modern soundtracks are dumping grounds for the throwaways, outtakes and recycled hits of today's stars and have little to do with the actual film. This isn't a bad thing, and Step Up is undoubtedly hot. Sean Paul's "(When You Gonna) Give It Up To Me" is great Caribbean club pop, and Kelis' "80s Joint" nicely straddles the line between kitsch and homage. Chris Brown does his underage lover boy thing on "Say Goodbye," while Anthony Hamilton's "Dear Life" is predictably beautiful.

bio: Issaquah, WA, indie rock trio Modest Mouse was formed in 1993 by vocalist/guitarist Isaac Brock, bassist Eric Judy, and drummer Jeremiah Green. After honing their muscular sound in "The Shed" -- a makeshift practice space built by Brock on the land next to his mother's trailer -- Modest Mouse entered Calvin Johnson's Dub Narcotic Studios to cut their 1994 self-titled debut single, released on Johnson's K Records label. Following a move to the Up label, the trio issued two 1996 LPs, This Is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About and Interstate 8..

the Lemonheads - the Lemonheads

year: 2006
* Alternative Pop/ Rock
* Adult Alternative Pop/ Rock
* Punk-Pop

review: My expectations were high, and they were met--maybe even exceeded. A great album that stands up with the best 'Heads stuff from the 90's. Better, more consistent than Baby I'm Bored, and more upbeat and fun.

the Strokes - Is This It

year 2001
* Garage Rock Revival
* Indie Roc
k
review: Blessed and cursed with an enormous amount of hype from the British press, the Strokes prove to be one of the few groups deserving of their glowing reviews. Granted, their high-fashion appeal and faultless influences -- Television, the Stooges, and especially Lou Reed and the Velvets -- have "critics' darlings" written all over them. But like the similarly lauded Elastica and Supergrass before them, the Strokes don't rehash the sounds that inspire them -- they remake them in their own image. On the Modern Age EP, singles like Hard to Explain, and their full-length debut, Is This It, the N.Y.C. group presents a pop-inflected, second-generation take on late-'70s New York punk, complete with raw, world-weary vocals, spiky guitars, and an insistently chugging backbeat. However, their songs also reflected their own early-twenties lust for life; singer/songwriter/guitarist Julian Casablancas and the rest of the band mix swaggering self-assurance with barely concealed insecurity on "The Modern Age" and reveal something akin to earnestness on "Barely Legal" -- a phrase that could apply to the Strokes themselves -- in the song's soaring choruses. The group revamps "Lust for Life" on "New York City Cops" and combines their raw power and infectious melodies on "Hard to Explain," arguably the finest song they've written in their career.

Ben Harper - Discography

90 -00...
* Singer/ Songwriter
* Adult Alternative Pop/ Rock
* Jam Bands

review: Combining shuddering, groove-laden funky soul and folky handcrafted acoustics, singer/songwriter Ben Harper had cult status during the course of the '90s but gained wider attention toward the end of the decade. Harper combined elements of classic singer/songwriters, blues revivalists, Jimi Hendrix, and '90s jam bands like Blues Traveler, Hootie & the Blowfish, and Phish, which meant that he was embraced by critics and college kids alike. Though he never had a hit album, his body of work sold consistently and he toured constantly, building a solid, dedicated fan base.

John Lennon - Walls and Bridges

year 74
* Singer/ Songwriter
* Pop/Rock
* Album Rock
review: This has always been my fav Lennon solo album. It's an album you can still listen to 30+ years later. The mixes sparkle without the Spector reverb wash. There are no songs that name drop Yoko or confess some half delusional profound devotion to her either. Did I also mention the album also rocks. Critics sometimes don't give this album the credit it deserves. A note about the packaging... Who do you blame for this mess? Why would you change the cover from the quite recognizable soccer(artist approved)water color-to a photo from the LP's back cover. The printed cd label is a disaster too! It depicts 5 morphing head shots into a single John/Yoko from seperates. First of all, Yoko is not on this album-at all. Second, this graphic is from the Sometimes in NY LP label (the sister remix release to this album). Seems like someone wants to get their (her) hands in the details that they (she) were (was) shut out of 30 years ago. Do something for the fans and get the details right-(Yoko), reinstate the original LP cover-complete with the fold over flaps, put the morphing label on the album it belongs to and stop rewriting rock history! Thankfully, the mixes sound good.

review: Van Morrison's music plays a role in many of modern cinema's most cherished films. Van Morrison At The Movies: The Soundtrack Hits, to be released February 13 by Manhattan/EMI Music Catalog Marketing, collects, for the first time, 19 of Morrison's best-known songs, presented as they've been featured in films. In addition to favorites including "Gloria" from The Outsiders, "Wild Night" from Thelma & Louise, and "Brown Eyed Girl" from Born On The Fourth Of July, the new collection includes a previously unreleased live version of "Moondance" from An American Werewolf In London, recorded live with strings in 1986 at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre.

Ultravox - the Collection

review: Rejecting the abrasive guitars of their punk-era contemporaries in favor of lushly romantic synthesizers, Ultravox emerged as one of the primary influences on the British electro-pop movement of the early '80s. Formed in London in 1974, the group -- originally dubbed Ultravox! -- was led by vocalist and keyboardist John Foxx (born Dennis Leigh), whose interest in synths and cutting-edge technology began during his school years; with an initial line-up consisting of bassist Chris Cross, keyboardist/violinist Billy Currie, guitarist Steve Shears and drummer Warren Cann..

Kate Bush - Never For Ever

year 80
* Prog-Rock/ Art Rock

review: When I listen to Never For Ever I feel haunted. I love it! Delius and Breathing are especially beautiful. And I recently discovered Blow Away and Night Scented Stock are one song. It's wild and surprising.
