The Knife do what they're good at, and what they're really good at is causing a cacophony of melodic noise and haunting vocals, with a dash of foreboding beats and ominous atmospheres to set the mood. A good portion of this album has some great cuts on it, including Cherry on Top and Full of Fire, while few others are just plain filler and tend to drag out the album to unnecessary lengths (Fraking being the prime example).

We have had a little time now to digest the track Where Are We Now? and to assess its true merit now that the "Blimey!" factor following its surprise release has worn off a bit. I still think that it's a very good song indeed. I did worry that some of the fragile, almost-out-of-tune vocal wasn't a deliberate effect but the voice of a man who can't quite sing as he used to, but - thank heavens - I was quite wrong. It is followed on the album by Valentine's Day, a track which wouldn't have been out of place on Aladdin Sane and which Bowie sings superbly, and there's plenty of other evidence here that he's still got it.

In just under a year, from June 2009 to May 2010, Eels released three albums (Hombre Lobo, End Times and Tomorrow Morning). Despite the sheer volume of music (those last two had a handful of bonus tracks as well), I honestly believe that there was one really amazing Eels album there.
Then, they toured, then, they disappeared.
At the end of October 2012, the Eels website dropped a bomb: a brand new Eels album would arrive in just over three months.Eels would return.
It would be wonderful.

Review: California singer songwriter Julia Holter is three albums in and improving on each outing. "Loud City Song" is the album where she paints a much more accessible musical canvass. This does not diminish the fact that this is a complex and often celestial work which demonstrates a sharp musical mind at work. Those who own her previous albums respectively "Tragedy" and "Eckstasis" will generally approve of this new one since it rekindles some of the best moments contained in those records and develops them further. In doing so she has not lost her cutting edge and songs like the fragmentary avant garde jazz of "Maxim's II" will still leave the listener scratching their head and wondering what chemical aids were its source inspiration.

Review: Bread has a general image (for those even familiar with them) of being a "soft rock" band. While it is true that the band made plenty of great ballads, this collection includes at least one tune to break that mold, hard rocker "Mother Freedom". For the most part, though, it has to be admitted that the group was mostly a singles act, so it becomes a game of "Which single CD collection has the best tunes?"

Review: Before I begin, let me just say that I gave this album 3 stars based on the fact that I appreciate the fact that Kanye kept his word and created an absolutely chaotic and polarizing album that has little to no chance of any form of mainstream success. With that said, listeners will either love or hate the album and I highly suggest you preview it before spending your hard earned money on it.

Camera Obscura - Desire Lines 2013 Album Review

Camera Obscura has taken another step in the direction of sounding like an American band, specifically, a band that might be on American AM radio in the 60's or 70's. Fans of earlier Camera Obscura albums will find Desire Lines to be a logical progression from My Maudlin Career, although it's really only a small step considering four years have passed since that album. Production is a bit more polished, perhaps, but the songs themselves come from the same general direction. And it's a good direction.

Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City Album Review

With each record is seems that Vampire Weekend expands their unique sound ever so slightly. The summertime pop and world beats of their debut and the electronic loops and mellow ballads of Contra are all here, albeit with a fresh coat of paint and some challenging instrumentation that demands repeated listens. With Modern Vampires of the City they've crafted some of their finest work yet and have dispelled any doubts about whether they could survive beyond the initial hype that first surrounded them.

Pistol Annies - Annie Up Album Review

This is the Pistol Annies' second album, and they have continued to put forth great music! I happen to be a fan of the Annies, so this is coming from a fan. I loved their first album, so I was very excited when the new one came out. They are not only three talented vocalists, but they are also gifted songwriters. Every song on this album was written by 1, 2 or all three of the Annies.

The album starts off with the song "I Feel a Sin Comin' On". I think it's one of the best songs on the album! It starts out with Miranda Lambert singing in a sultry a cappella. The first part of the song is sung in a cappella with each of the girls (Miranda, Angie, and Ashley) taking a verse. Then the song goes into a sultry melody to match the mood of the song. I think this song is very nicely done. It's one of my favorites.
