What was meant as a stop-gap between "Jagged" and "Splinter" almost became nothing at all as Numan grew weary of the project. After putting the whole thing on the shelf for a while, Numan and Ade Fenton returned to work on the project with new enthusiasm and it became much more than just a collection of old songs.
"Dead Son Rising" is a complete album, one of the most complete albums I've heard in a long while. More than just a collection of singles, this album has things like PACE and FLOW from track to track, start to finish. As it ends, it compels the listener to play it again. "Resurrection" draws the listener in as it builds, setting the stage for "Big Noise Transmission", which flat out rocks more than any Numan track since "Crazier". "Dead Sun Rising", the almost-title-track, may be the best of many unabashedly-melodic industrial moments on the album. The lyrics dip once again into one of Numan's sci-fi personas, and the bells in the instrumental break are absolutely gorgeous. "When The Sky Bleeds, He Will Come" works through a slow crawl and then satisfyingly breaks into a rocking-chorus, then does it a couple more times for good measure.

Kanye West - Yeezus
Genres: Hardcore Rap, Left-Field Hip-Hop, Midwest RapRelease Date: June 18, 2013
Review: Before I begin, let me just say that I gave this album 3 stars based on the fact that I appreciate the fact that Kanye kept his word and created an absolutely chaotic and polarizing album that has little to no chance of any form of mainstream success. With that said, listeners will either love or hate the album and I highly suggest you preview it before spending your hard earned money on it.

John Furisciante - Niandra LaDes And Usually Just A T-Shirt
| Genre Alternative rock/pop |
concentrated on pleasant psychedelic instrumentals with plenty of backward-guitar effects. While some might find the jump from bizarre vocal numbers to atmospheric instrumentals (and the resultant shift in mood) a bit jarring, the two halves do share certain characteristics. Frusciante's singing voice has a fragile, wispy quality that sits well next to the often delicate second half, and the sparse arrangements of the first half help set the stage for the gossamer guitar work later on. Because the whole project has a definite stream-of-consciousness feel, it does fall prey to underdeveloped ideas at times, but overall, Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt is an intriguing and unexpected departure from Frusciante's work with the Chili Peppers.
Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City Album Review

With each record is seems that Vampire Weekend expands their unique sound ever so slightly. The summertime pop and world beats of their debut and the electronic loops and mellow ballads of Contra are all here, albeit with a fresh coat of paint and some challenging instrumentation that demands repeated listens. With Modern Vampires of the City they've crafted some of their finest work yet and have dispelled any doubts about whether they could survive beyond the initial hype that first surrounded them.
Queen - A Night At The Opera
The Marx Brothers spent more time and effort on their movie "A Night at the Opera" than any other in order to produce a lasting masterwork. Queen determined to do the same on this album, and the result is an all time classic album. The album features two number one hits ("You're my best friend" and a Rhapsody you may have heard before) as well as recording techniques that pushed the technology of the day to its limits.
Opening with "Death on Two Legs", a bitter song about their ex-manager
driven by Brian May's distorted guitar, we jump to the aesthetic foppery of "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" and then into Roger Taylor's straight rock with bent lyrics in "I'm in Love With My Car". This album is nothing if not eclectic.
The stand out track from Side One for me is "'39". This is a country style piece about faster than light interstellar travel; however, this is a misleading descriptoin. While the strumming style is very country, Brian May's voice is soft and English so the effect is almost folky. The lyrics too are written in a style that implies that the song is about ships traveling to the colonies in America, not outer space.
Side Two is where the album is most impressive, and also most progressive. All the songs are of the highest calibre, with the exception of "Good Company" which is merely a good song. From the start of the powerful and atmospheric "Prophet's Song" (which appears to be about Noah) to Brian May playing "God Save the Queen", this would have to be one of the great album sides of all time.
I have only two minor complaints about this album. "Seaside Rendezvous" is not that strong a song, and we have already had our light-hearted Edwardian fix in "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon". Also, "The Prophet's Song", while for the most part brilliant, probably plays around too much with the echoing vocal effects for my taste.
Queen fans may argue about the status of this album as their Magnum Opus, but it is undoubtably one the highlights of their stellar recording career.

Veils - the Runaway Found
year: 04 review: The Runaway Found is a weathered debut album. With less focus on making an eager first impression than most bands emerging from the post-grunge era, the Veils consume themselves with a rock canvas rooted in singer/songwriter Finn Andrews' folk upbringing. An unjaded view of roma
nce and desire is cast, and the Veils' sincerity is far from hidden from the stormy design of the album's atmospheric backdrop. The Runaway Found basks in its glorious pop spotlight simply because it enjoys the heat, and such a surefire introduction is bound to be impressive. Andrews, who was just 17 and 18 when he composed the songs found here, is confident and sensitive, much like Richard Ashcroft and the late Jeff Buckley. Whether his heart is broken or mended, Andrews' songwriting is reflective of hope and regret. Andrews' lyrics and the Veils' mature presentation complement one another, further indicating the Veils' sharp ear for keeping things just so. From the majestic melodies of "Guiding Light" and "The Leavers Dance" to the thunderous clamor of "More Heat Than Light," The Runaway Found never loses its momentum. more...>

Thrice - Major/Minor Review and Yellow Belly Lyrics
I can't think of a reason why Thrice shouldn't be my favorite group in the world right now. Major/Minor leaves next to nothing to be desired in a modern rock record. (Alternative/Indie Rock) Everything that Thrice has done well in the past is present on this disc in droves upon droves. While not being overly progressive in the vein of 'The Alchemy Index' EP's, (atmospheric) and seeming slightly more filled out than the unabashed minimalism of 'Beggars', 'Major/Minor' succeeds at being both raw and sonic and captures the sound of a band that has reached its summit. Lyrically, Dustin Kensrue is without equal.
That's not to say he simply parrots SAT words one after the other but there's a careful, poetic quality (screamo) to his words that seems to extend far beyond his years. As if that weren't enough, (cathartic) Kensrue puts forth a vocal effort that is both singular and powerful. on 'Disarmed' he croons and moves softly through watery moments while on 'Blur' he manages to unleash some of the buzz-saw ferocity that helped put Thrice on the map years ago. While Kensrue is arguably the greatest (confrontational) front man in modern rock, 'Major/Minor' does not solely belong to him. Teppei Teranishi has come a long way from post-hardcore (aggressive) shredding and he drives that point home on gems like (rousing) 'Treading Paper' and 'Call it in the Air'. His playing is calculated & is less about mach 3 soloing than crafting ambient, mood inducing leads.

Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die (1996) Recommends
rating: 80/100 - review: If one wants to know how prog and jazz fusion changed to assume a 90s still-life in sound then they just need to listen to this fascinating double CD! A group from Chicago that starts from the premise of cold, atmospheric sound and departs to the point of improvisation and the stretching of their original musical ideas. The scenes evoked by this wonderful set of "program music" include (in my most sober mind) camp fires in the middle of pasture at night with fireflies bugging the night-glowed campers. Happy happy mystical joy! Ice space and the sudden interruption of a rail road in the distant distance. (The video for one of this record's tracks featured a very homey looking home video of icicles forming on trees in the middle of a mostly barren field and the formation is speeded up to show the process via elapsed time photography like, man man man . . .)this album and its music is just too cool, it forces one to renew that term, steal it back from the millennials who use it now to describe their silly video games or whatever garbage they be into now. `Cause this album is just so smooth and delicious and COOL to be ignored without superlatives.

The Whigs - In the Dark Reviews
Based on 18 critics - Overal Score: 53/ 100
Description: With their stunning third cd, In The Dark, The Whigs have gone widescreen. Bursting with energy, emotion, and unpredictable experimentation, the Athens, GA-based trio tear open the artistic envelope, bringing both nuance and eclectic strength to songs like 'Hundred/Million' and the raucous first single, 'Kill Me Carolyne'. In The Dark is both atmospheric and ambitious, without losing the pedal-to-the-metal power that earned them universal praise as one of America's finest young Rock 'n' Roll bands. Both an accessible album and one that captures the band's on-stage passion, In The Dark reveals another layer in the band's songwriting and highlights what fans and critics have fallen in love with.
It's for song "So Lonely" from the band's current album "In The Dark."

Ween - Craters Of The Sac
year 99 review: By 1993's major label debut Pure Guava, Ween had distilled their unique mix of eclectic pop and crazed humor to its essence. GodWeenSatan: The Oneness and The Pod were fascinating, but occasionally frustrating albums; at 19 songs, Pure Guava is more polished and concise, but it's still sprawling and occasionally sick, featuring the fuzzed-out "Touch My Tooter" and the five-minute noise-burst "Mourning Glory," a tale of pumpkin-smoking gone horribly awry. Though "I Play It Off Legit" -- a muttered conversation set to atmospheric keyboards -- and the rhythmic, bass-heavy "The Goin' Gets Tough From The Getgo" could have appeared on The Pod, most of Pure Guava's songs have a poppy, accessible sheen. Fragmented, distorted tracks like "Big Jilm," "Flies On My Dick" and the live favorite "Poop Ship Destroyer" benefit from the album's cleaner production, giddily mixing catchiness and silliness. If The Pod was influenced by the band's Scotchguard habit, Pure Guava sounds like it was recorded while Dean and Gene were huffing helium; it's fast, shiny and crisp, particularly on the hyper rant "Pumpin' 4 the Man" and the minor alternative rock hit "Push Th' Little Daisies." Ween's prog-rock fascination surfaces on "The Stallion, Pt. 3" and on "Don't Get 2 Close To My Fantasy," which sports wonderfully inane lyrics like "Stare into the lion's eyes / And if you taste the candy / You'll get to the surprise." In the midst of this weirdness, the sweet, seemingly genuine ballad "Sarah" feels like the album's strangest song. With Pure Guava, Ween moved away from the snippets of random craziness that defined their first two albums toward a more organized style. Considering Elektra released it, it's just as uncompromising as their previous work, but it hints at just how much further they could go with their music.

Jonsi "Go"
review: Sounds like a peppy good time. (Sigur Ros first solo album) The sound has matured and become something new and different with every record. The songs alternate (atmospheric) between electronics and instrumentals, some incorporating both. (sugary vocals) It all comes together beautifully. For me, it was appealing (like "Animal Arithmetic") upon first impression, which doesn't happen most of the time.

Scott Walker 'Scott 4'
review: Great to great!!! I've been plundering all (good-natured) of Scott Walkers albums of late, and (atmospheric) I have to say that this one Scott 4,(Stately) is by far the best record. My favourite song is without doubt ' The The Seventh Seal'. (dramatic) There is something timeless (poignant) about this record where most of the songs have aged really well. (dreamy) But that voice - how it booms out of the speakers (plaintive) and seems to dominate the music, (rousing) is simply great.
