Manics frontman's winning second solo LP

review: Inspired lyrically by Victor Jara and musically -  by Wilco and  Billy Bragg's Mermaid Avenue, this second solo album by the guitar-and-vocals Manic sees James Dean Bradfield swap the lyrics of Nicky Wire for those of Wire's brother, Patrick Jones.

The results are lyrical, memorable and exciting, while the music is steelier than the often-genial rocking of Bradfield's otherwise excellent 2006 solo debut, The Great Western. On songs like Recuerda and Thirty Thousand Milk Bottles, Jones' lyrics range across Jara's life and times and Bradfield is as forceful and inspired as on any of the Manics' best records. A more than decent side project that deserves a wide audience.

album info: Even in Exile is a 2020 studio record by the British singer-songwriter James Dean Bradfield.
