It’s possible that Oczy Mlody will disappoint those looking for an easy hit, or the sound of old-school Lips, but for those willing to persist and explore, it’s a work of nuance and intelligence.

90 - Slantmagazine
What makes Oczy Mlody so enthralling is that the Flaming Lips are ambitious in their exploration of the aftermath of their typical spectacle.

80 - The Quietus
Oczy Mlody re-presents Flaming Lips as a band to be taken seriously once again, despite how much fun they’re clearly having doing it.

80 - Paste Magazine
The instrumentation here is expectedly psychedelic, anchored in both freeform jams and trip-hop grooves. But somehow the collective makes the two opposing forces, which read like they were picked via pulling genres out of a hat, actually work thanks in no small part to Steven Drozd’s delicate instrumental blending.

80 - The Guardian
Somewhere in the haze lurks their old knack for writing great, off-kilter pop songs that reflect and escape the bewildering world around us.

80 - The Skinny
Ok, some of their sillier excesses may jar ever so slightly (unicorns, faeries, witches, wizards and frogs with demon eyes can all be found here, so some strapping yourself in may be required) and fans may well feel the absence of a true pop banger à la Race For The Prize or She Don’t Use Jelly. In every other aspect, however, this is The Flaming Lips on top of their game: refracting the weirdness of the world through a youthful sense of awe and wonder.

Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out

year 2000
*Alternative pop
* Noise pop/indie rock
review: After years as one of indie rock's standard-bearing groups, Yo La Tengo surpasses itself with And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out. A culturally literate, emotionally rich album, on songs like "Let's Save Tony Orlando's House," "The Crying of Lot G," and "The Last Days of Disco," it alludes to The Simpsons, enigmatic author Thomas Pynchon and independent films while exploring the comforting, confining, complex aspects of relationships. "Our Way to Fall" sets Ira Kaplan's recollection of falling in love to a dreamy, down-to-earth backdrop of gently brushed drums, luminous organs and vibes; "The Crying of Lot G" transforms the syrupy sweetness of '50s ballads into a monologue about a relationship's shortcomings. "Madeline"'s shimmery indie bossa-nova and the countrified ballad "Tears Are in Your Eyes" showcase Georgia Hubley's buttery, empathetic voice; her singing makes these vignettes universal as well as personal. Like mature indie rock records such as Pavement's Terror Twilight and Jim O'Rourke's Eureka, And Then Nothing... favors mellow songwriting, detailed arrangements, and eclectic influences, such as the Silver Apples-like drum machines and doo wop backing vocals that adorn many of the songs. The wintry, implosive "Everyday" uses both of these elements, along with a plaintive guitar and hushed, hypnotic vocals, to begin the album on a surprisingly somber note. Similarly, the off-kilter beats, odd piano bursts, and harmonies on "Saturday" add to the song's awkward, uneasy beauty. Finally, nine songs into the album, Yo La Tengo breaks out the whammy and feedback action on "Cherry Chapstick," their most incandescent song since "Sugarcube." Easily one of 2000's most accomplished albums, And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out isn't as immediate as some of the group's earlier work, but it's just as enduring, proving that Yo La Tengo is the perfect band to grow old with.

Modest Mouse - Live, 2000

year 2000
* Alternative Pop/ Rock
* Indie Rock
* Emo
* Lo-Fi
* Noise Pop
bio: Issaquah, WA, indie rock trio Modest Mouse was formed in 1993 by vocalist/guitarist Isaac Brock, bassist Eric Judy, and drummer Jeremiah Green. After honing their muscular sound in "The Shed" -- a makeshift practice space built by Brock on the land next to his mother's trailer -- Modest Mouse entered Calvin Johnson's Dub Narcotic Studios to cut their 1994 self-titled debut single, released on Johnson's K Records label. Following a move to the Up label, the trio issued two 1996 LPs, This Is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About and Interstate 8..

This album grabs u by the_shoulders & shakes u until u give in_to its avvesome beauty. For me, it only_took about 30 seconds of the_first track & I vvas sold. It exudes_an incredible vvarmth reminiscent of My Bloody_Valentine's Loveless. This album is not_to be missed.

The Flaming Lips - Embryonic

Genre: Rock Styles: Noise Pop, Neo-Psychedelia, Alternative Pop/ Rock, Experimental Rock

mini review:
Incredible record, start to finish, & the group's best since The Soft Bulletin. Innovative & completely unorthodox but I think it's probably their most accessible yet.

Vivian Girls - Vivian Girls

Genre: Rock Styles: Indie Pop, Noise Pop - Artist: Vivian Girls, Album: Vivian Girls -10 tracks First Single: Wild Eyes Best song: Tell The World

album review...

Medicine - To The Happy Few (August 6, 2013)

Over ten years after they called it quits as a working band, 2013 finds the original members of Medicine reunited and proudly offering a recorded LP on Captured Tracks. To The Happy Few is the sound of a highly inspired group reclaiming its creative legacy, thoroughly immersed in the practice of mixing harsh noise with obsessive melodic detail and heavily groovy rocking. "Long As The Sun" is the first song we shared from the 2013 Medicine LP. It simultaneously references the origins of the band and explodes into brand new territory. An exuberant, belligerently pounding carnival.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Now I Got Worry

Genre
Blues Rock
Noise pop Punk

year: 96 - review: Where Orange had some awkward attempts at funk, Now I Got Worry is a raw bloozy workout, full of harsh guitars and barked vocals. The sound of the Blues Explosion is so fiery and alive that it overshadows Spencer's habit for campy posturing, and that's what keeps Now I Got Worry afloat. Once it's finished, it becomes hard not to second-guess Spencer's intentions, but the album is the closest the Blues Explosion have come to capturing their wild, intense live show on record.

Robert Pollard - Space City Kicks Reviews

Based on 4 critics - Overal Score:  67/ 100

Description: 2011 release from the prolific Indie Rock singer/songwriter and former leader of Guided By Voices. Seems like all anyone wants to talk about these days is the GBV reunion tour. It is pretty amazing to see the guys back together, a little older, seemingly no wiser: the way you dreamed it would be, if you dreamed about '90s-era indie rock bands reuniting. Don't imagine, though, that it's the only magic trick Robert Pollard has in his scientific box. Space City Kicks, an 18 song compendium of Bee Thousand-sized sonic chunks that range from noisy pop to poppy noise but mostly just R-O-C-K. Except the ballads, which are melancholy in a way Dwight Twilley never was, making it a mystery why Pollard posed for a recent promo picture with what is clearly Twilley's guitar (and Rod Stewart's Vans, but that makes perfect sense).

Circa Survive "Blue Sky Noise"

review: This is represents a further move (modern rock) towards the middle 4 Circa Survive. Similar to On Letting Go,(2007 album) the group has traded some of their dark urgency for better production (grammy-winning producer)and more accessibility. With the exception of "Glass Arrows", (confrontational) their sound is much less interesting and immediate. (emo-punk,feeling blue) In Aviate does a better Circa Survive than Circa Survive now.
