David Lowery - The Palace Guards Reviews

Based on 2 critics - Overal Score:  75/ 100

Ah You Left Me Video

After years of helping steer the lauded and eclectic careers of both of his bands, Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven, cofounder and frontman David Lowery presents a collection of songs recorded apart from those iconic alternative rock entities.
Stopping short of calling it a solo record, Lowery has collaborated with a handful of trusted musical cohorts associated with his Richmond, Virginia-based studio, Sound of Music an inner circle that has Lowery has relied on for over seventeen years and who have been instrumental in helping create the sounds heard on this album as well as past projects. David recorded and produced The Palace Guards in conjunction with John Morand and Alan Weatherhead. Key players include Miguel Urbiztondo on drums, David Immergluck on guitars and bass, Craig Harmon played organs and Ferd Moyse on upright bass and fiddle. Special guest appearances include Cracker mates Sal Maida and Johnny Hickman as well as the late Mark Linkous who played keybords on Big Life.

The Strokes To Release New Album, 'Angles,' on March 22nd

The Strokes announce the release date for their highly anticipated fourth album, Angles, on March 22nd via RCA records in the US, and March 21st via Rough Trade Records in the UK. A new single titled "Under Cover of Darkness," will be heard on radio starting in February. The complete track-listing for the album can be found below. More details on Angles will be released in the coming weeks, as will details for a Spring US tour.

Angles is the band's first new release since 2006's First Impressions of Earth and marks the ambition of that album with the immediacy of the band's earlier albums Is This It (2001) and Room On Fire (2003). In 2010, the band returned to the road, playing and headlining major festivals in the United States and UK, including the Isle of Wight Festival, Lollapalooza, Hurricane Festival, Splendour In The Grass, Rockness, Outside Lands, and Austin City Limits. Time Out Chicago hailed the Lollapalooza performance as "the best set I've seen since covering Lollapalooza. Better than Radiohead in 2008. Better than... who headlined last year? ...The crowd...was euphoric."

The Whigs - In the Dark Reviews

Based on 18 critics - Overal Score:  53/ 100

Description: With their stunning third cd, In The Dark, The Whigs have gone widescreen. Bursting with energy, emotion, and unpredictable experimentation, the Athens, GA-based trio tear open the artistic envelope, bringing both nuance and eclectic strength to songs like 'Hundred/Million' and the raucous first single, 'Kill Me Carolyne'. In The Dark is both atmospheric and ambitious, without losing the pedal-to-the-metal power that earned them universal praise as one of America's finest young Rock 'n' Roll bands. Both an accessible album and one that captures the band's on-stage passion, In The Dark reveals another layer in the band's songwriting and highlights what fans and critics have fallen in love with.

It's for song "So Lonely" from the band's current album "In The Dark."

Ellie Goulding - Lights album review scores and more

Description: 2010 debut record from the new sweetheart of British Pop. With her unique blend of Folk influences and Electronica she is already a firm favorite amongst tastemakers and bloggers alike. Lights features 10 songs, including the singles 'Under The Sheets' and 'Starry Eyed'. Her chief collaborator is Fin Dow-Smith, AKA the Electro-don Starsmith, who produced the majority of the tracks on the album and co-wrote four of them. Ellie's songs are built around big proper tunes that lift you up and spin you round, yet there's something off-center about them, something sparkly, filmic, haunting, odd. She mixes heartfelt emotion with other-wordly atmospherics, spins cool Electronica into dreamy warmth. Her insistence on putting her guitar in every track, whether an acoustic cover or a gorgeous song about new love gives her soaring Electro-Folk an earthed rootedness.

Lia Ices - Grown Unknown ReviewScores and More

Based on 6 critics - Overal Score:  68/ 100

Description: True to the ever-present dichotomies that serve as a source of inspiration for her, Lia Ices' emotionally driven and experimental pop music is both avant-garde and timeless. A natural yet refined grace permeates her work: she is a piano herself. Dancing on a finely crafted line between the percussive qualities of her instrument, and the melodic elements within the rhythm of her voice, Ices' music reveals itself as epiphany. With such overt elegance as if from a bygone era, listening to her songs inspires a psychic time slip, and its hard to know if you're wading in the warmest of memories or awed by the invention and glow of new surroundings.

The album starts with an inviting whisper on stand-out track "Love is Won", as Ices' vocals "Oh you know I need your mystic mind" are accompanied by solo piano. Less than a minute in, we start to catch a glimpse at the depths of the record as we find ourselves, all of a sudden, in the midst of a swaying, swaggering down tempo soul, punctuated by bass and drum interplay.

The Joy Formidable - The Big Roar Reviews

Based on 10 critics - Overal Score:  79/ 100

Description: The Big Roar is the debut album by Welsh Indie Rock band The Joy Formidable. The record follows a year that has seen them move from tipped outsiders to band most likely to. Numerous festival appearances followed by a rampage across the UK as headliners of the NME Radar Tour has had tongues wagging and seen lead singer Ritzy feted everywhere from the NME Cool List to The News Of The World's Fabulous Magazine as a pop star in waiting. Little wonder that NME observed in this year's Cool List that 'it's a safe bet that she'll soon be going supernova'.

Sonic Youth – SYR9: Simon Werner a Disparu soundtrack Reviews

Based on 0 critics - Overal Score:  N/A

Description: 2011 soundtrack recording from the veteran Underground Alt-Rockers. In Spring 2010, Sonic Youth gathered at their Echo Canyon West studio in Hoboken, New Jersey, to watch the rushes of a new movie, Simon Werner a Disparu, by French director Fabrice Gobert. They spent the following few weeks recording music which was then shaped as needed to fit the various scenes. For this release, rather than present the small clips of music as used in the movie, the band went back in the autumn to the original tapes and re-organized the various pieces 4 this original OST release, sometimes montaging multiple songs together, other times extending cues into new sonic realms. Release Date: February 15, 2011.

Mixtape 92 Curated by Craig Fox of The Greenhornes

Greenhornes frontman Craig Fox has an extensive and obscure knowledge of sixties rock and pyschadelia. We know this because after he delivered his mixtape tracklist to us, we couldn't find half the songs. Doing the best we could in the digital age, searching for translations of old, obscure vinyl, we had to shorten this mixtape a few cuts. But it's also one of the coolest, most stylized mixtapes we've had since Mixtape 1988. So grab a blacklight, pass the pipe, and enjoy.

Prince Discography

- For You (1978)
For You is Prince's debut album. Released on April 7, 1978 and bearing the soon-to-be classic tag "Produced, arranged, composed, and performed by Prince," the album is generally regarded as a promising but somewhat insubstantial early effort. The album peaked at #163 on the US Pop Charts (#21 R&B), and would go on to sell 430,000 copies domestically (983,000 copies worldwide).

Robert Pollard - Space City Kicks Reviews

Based on 4 critics - Overal Score:  67/ 100

Description: 2011 release from the prolific Indie Rock singer/songwriter and former leader of Guided By Voices. Seems like all anyone wants to talk about these days is the GBV reunion tour. It is pretty amazing to see the guys back together, a little older, seemingly no wiser: the way you dreamed it would be, if you dreamed about '90s-era indie rock bands reuniting. Don't imagine, though, that it's the only magic trick Robert Pollard has in his scientific box. Space City Kicks, an 18 song compendium of Bee Thousand-sized sonic chunks that range from noisy pop to poppy noise but mostly just R-O-C-K. Except the ballads, which are melancholy in a way Dwight Twilley never was, making it a mystery why Pollard posed for a recent promo picture with what is clearly Twilley's guitar (and Rod Stewart's Vans, but that makes perfect sense).
